Camera Geijutsu started in 1954 under the name Sankei Camera, with founding publisher Sangyō Keizai Shimbunsha ( Tokyo) and founding editor Kuwabara Kineo.
In October 1959 Tokyo Chūnichi Shimbunsha became publisher and the name changed to Camera Geijutsu with the November issue.
The magazine had an affinity for avant-garde art.
At the start of the 1960s, Imai Hisae, a young photographer from Tokyo, experimented with photo-literature in the pages of Camera Geijutsu. She graduated in 1953 from Bunka Gakuin, an institute known for its avant-garde art education even before the war.
Imai was one of the first to use color in her photography, using multiple exposures to produce fantasy-like images.
In the magazine her work was described as “Photo-Poem”, an unusual phrase marking it as a hybrid of photography and poetry. ( Toda Masako/Japanese Photo Magazines 1880s-1980s, Goliga Books.)
In 1960 the ‘Camera Geijutsu Award’ was established for photographs published in the magazine. ( first winner: Nagano Shigeichi). In 1963 this prize was changed to a new-artist prize ( first winner: Naitō Masatoshi and Asai Shirō)
