Photo Art was published as successor to a series called Shashin Satsuie Sōsho ( Taking photographs; December 1947-Februari 1949, 8 volumes ), each volume of which had been devoted to a featured subject, such as photographing women.
In Januari 1956 Domon Ken became the judge of the monthly photo contest, and the magazine provided the base for the realist photography movement, taking on this role from Camera, which ceased publication later that year.
